According to research, there are more than a million students enrolled in South Africa’s Universities, Colleges and Universities of Technology every year. All the Universities are autonomous, reporting to their own councils rather than government.

The Success story began when South Africa government invested a huge amount in the education sector after the end of apartheid. 

Precisely in 2013, it was recorded that 19.7 percent of the country’s total budget went to education – a relatively high figure by international standards.

  1. University of Cape Town

Founded in 1829 as South African College, the University of Cape Town is the oldest university in South Africa and one of the best in the country.

The University is known for its beautiful architecture and has played a significant role in the fight against apartheid. It has one of the most diverse student communities in South Africa.

2. University of the Witwatersrand

Internationally recognized and popularly called Wits University, It is the leading institution for paleo sciences, boasting the largest fossil collections in the Southern hemisphere. 

With multiple campuses in northern Johannesburg, the University also has major roots in the mining industry, and came 15th in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2018 for mineral & mining engineering.

3. University of Pretoria

Known to be one of the largest and oldest South African universities, founded in 1908, University of Pretoria (UP) earned top-20 scores for two of the BRICS indicators: employer reputation and international faculty. 
UP offers more than 1,800 programs in Afrikaans and English, and operates seven campuses as well as other sites such as the Pretoria Academic Hospital.

4. Stellenbosch University

Located in a small town of the same name and founded in 1918,  though it has roots as far back as 1864, the University has more than 29,000 students and five campuses, and has cemented a reputation as a world-class institution.

5. University of Johannesburg

Ranked to be another top University in South Africa, formed from a merger, it earned a very high score (ninth in the ranking) for the percentage of international faculty members indicator, and was also ranked in the top 50 in BRICS for the international students indicator, with more than 3,000 of its 50,000 students coming from outside South Africa.
